How Does Blogging Help SEO?

How Does Blogging Help SEO?

For some ass reason or another, everyone is always telling you to start a blog. Hey, I'm one of those voices, waxing rhapsodic about the benefits of blogging. I even wrote an incredibly popular Ultimate Guide to Blogging for SEO to teach y'all how to do it properly!

But for those of you who I haven't yet cornered at a bar, met on Hinge and info-dumped to, or enjoyed a sprightly convo over a free Zoom consultation, let me drop some opinions here about blogging.

There Are Three Facets of Blogging for SEO

There is more than one reason, and more than one strategy behind blogging for SEO.

✨ Targeting new keywords with blog posts
✨ Reinforcing existing keywords with innerlinks
✨ Adding to your website's total value (in Google's opinion)

These all are superb reasons to blog, and of course with our overarching SEO goal of bringing in more organic traffic through google searches. More visitors to website = more opportunities to convert to sales!

So yeah, the first one on that list is about targeting new keywords through blogging. Each page of your website should already be targeting a unique keyword, and writing a blog post allows you space to add a whole new page to your website - and therefore a whole new keyword to target.

You can use tools like AnswerThePublic to find out questions that people search, and answer those - for example, this blog is targeting the keyword 'how does blogging help SEO' - so hopefully, everyone who googles that question ends up here on this blog post. Hello, Googlers!

Within this blog post, I can also add innerlinks like this one to my home page, which targets my home page's keyword: SEO for small creative businesses. The more innerlinks you have pointing to your pages with keyword anchors, the better the SEO.

Even if you aren't doing these last two points, all blog posts are valuable. Google decides who ranks at the top of Google search results based on how much it thinks you are the expert at a subject, and any expert on a subject is likely to have a lot to say about that subject. The more words on your website, the more expertise (in Google's opinion).

Google wants to refer websites that it believes provide value to its users. The more text, the more links, the more pages = the more value, in a grand sorta sense. It's more complicated than all that, of course, but it's a good way to start wrapping your head around the idea.

So, even if no-one reads the blog posts, they are working to reinforce your whole website's presence. Don't give up on blog writing just becasue your analytics say no one is finding them. They're worth doing!

If you want step by step guidelines to exactly HOW to write optimised blogs that will strengthen your website presence and bring you more traffic, you should check out the Ultimate Guide to Blogging for SEO and get on board! I also have a guide to help you with your Faire SEO, if you are working to get more sales on the wholesale platform.

Love ya!
