As the resident SEO Bitch floating around on Instagram, you may be surprised to see that my monday posts for the last few months have been food pics. I am not a food blogger and I'm not even posting good food pics, I'm just showing you the highlights of what I've stuffed in my gob over the previous week.
Why I Started
I got so, so angry recently at instagram - scrolling through the posts, specifically in my SEO Bitch profile where I almost exclusively follow small businesses and brands and marketing experts. It was a 100% chance that the post was trying to sell me something. Whether it was selling me advice on how to market my brand more or selling me a product that they'd made, either way, it really made my head explode that it was all just advertising.
I wanted to give both myself, and you, a break from being sold something with just some pictures that do not sell you anything.
Why Food
When instagram first was invented, it was all about showing terrible selfies from the top-down angle as we transitioned from MySpace/ Facebook era pics, as well as food pics. The food pics have now become collabs between influencers and restaurants where they're trying to convince you that 'insta-worthy' food which LOOKS COOL is going to be worth a hella price as well as actually taste good.
I don't even share or tag the restaurants I went to, (except in special cases I guess) and a lot of the time it's incredibly unappetising photos of the stuff I cooked this week. But damn if it isn't selling you anything. It might give you some ideas for meals, it might give you nothing. I don't even need you to interact with it, it's just a simple pause in the constant onslaught of being sold stuff.
Unexpected Benefits
I pay so much more attention to what I eat now. Sometimes. When I have a meal, and remember that I want to be able to post it in my Monday Meals posts, I pay more attention, I take a photo, I have it in my list of things that I did that week - or sometimes it's an awakening that i have not been eating properly, or there hasn't been a vegetable in there in a while, or oh no i went out so many times that's where all my money went. It's something of a journal for me now, so I'll keep doing it.
I'm Not Sales-Shaming
Of course, I know we all gotta make sales posts. Most of my other posts during the week are a hard sell, and I'm in no way being negative about this, saying you shouldn't make hard sales pitches or anything of the sort. I'm just doing my part to reduce that 100% of posts being sales related to being sliiiiiiightly less.
A Personal Approach
You may have noticed through my general vibe, aesthetic and ongoing professionalism that the way I appeal to potential clients is not through having a super polished, marketable, perfect appearance. But I am authentic, I invite you into my life, and this aligns with how I wish to be invited into your world to help you with your business goals. If you have use of my SEO for small creative business skills or invest in one of my Ultimate Guides to Faire SEO or Etsy SEO, that's awesome, and you know its full of stuff i actually care about.
Love you
