The Goth Wrestles with Black

The Goth Wrestles with Black

As a self-proclaimed Goth Magpie, I wear a LOT of black (with hints of something sparkly that I trinketed from somewhere). It's my favourite colour (yes it is a colour I prommy) and I surround myself with a lot of black, even furnishing my home and its walls with black.

But I really wrestled with Black Friday this year.

For some reason, I thought Black Friday was invented by Amazon, though that was absolutely a mistake - the shopping event dates back to the 1940's.

However, I do still have a weird hangup about it, basically this concept of gameifying capitalism in a way, of creating such intensity around a single shopping day. I also hate the pressure that it puts on small businesses, making lots of buyers wait until 'the big day' to get the best deals.

Don't get me wrong, I love a deal. I'm just conflicted. In the past, I would say that Black Friday encourages people to buy what they don't need, but in this economy I'm not sure if that's true. It feels more and more true instead, that people are waiting for Black Friday so that they can finally afford to buy the things that they need.

And that points to another problem. Why is everything so damn expensive? Are prices artificially heightened in order to make a sale look bigger? Like, does that hairdryer RRP£80 but now the ticket price says RRP£100 at 20% off? There's no TRUST with the big box brands anymore.

We've all heard the pleas to shop small this Christmas, to make your shopping count. I'm not going to sing that tune because most likely, you are a small business yourself and arleady know that shopping small is a more concientious choice.

And I guess I'll do a Black Friday Sale. All of The Ultimate Guides are 20% off until midnight friday 28.11.25, bringing them down from £75 to £60. Discount applies automatically at checkout.  The SEO for Shopify Masterclass is 20% off, from £649 down to £519. That's insane. Am I really going to do that? New price automatically applies.

If you're having a Black Friday sale, I hope you make lots of sales! If you're shopping this Black Friday, I hope you snag a bargain. As always, this is the expert in SEO for Small business, signing off.

Love yOu
